BANGALORE: Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) annexed the Deccan Herald super division hockey title with a 2-1 victory over Army XI in the final at the KSHA here on Thursday. Dominating the first half, IOCL took control of the match with skipper Deepak Thakur, the tournament's highest scorer, slotting home the first goal in the seventh minute. IOCL, last year's runner-up, held sway for most of the second half too and in the 49th minute, Bharath Chikaria notched up what seemed to be the easiest of goals. Latching on to a pass from the right flank, Bharath dodged past a couple of defenders and gently tapped the ball into the goal as Army XI's goalkeeper P.T. Rao looked on helplessly. Rao had acquitted himself very creditably till then, making a number of saves for his side. Army XI, after a number of late sallies in the second half, finally managed to get one in with S. Sunil scoring in the 67th minute. Earlier, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), despite the 3-3 draw with Namdhari XI, took the third spot. Vikramjit (28th), Irshad Ali (49th) and Ravi Naiker (65th) scored for BPCL, while Gurpreet Singh (22nd and 46th) scored twice off penalty corners and Karamjit Singh (60th) scored for Namdhari.
SAI beats KSP
In another match, Sports Authority of India (SAI) beat Karnataka State Police (KSP) 4-2 with Varun Chinnapa (11th, 28th and 45th) scoring a treble and A.B. Cheeyana (19th) scoring for SAI. Umesh Mutegar (38th and 63rd) reduced the margin. Special prizes: Top scorer: Deepak Thakur (15 goals). Best forward: S. Sunil (Army XI). Best midfielder: Dhananjay Madhik (Army XI). Best defender: Harpal Singh (Namdhari). Best goalkeeper: Shivender Singh (Namdhari). Most promising player: Vikramjit Singh. Player of the Tournament: Sardara Singh (IOCL). Promising umpire: Pradhan Cariappa.
