Over 500 children from schools across the Capital took part in a "Story-Telling Marathon" organised by the National Centre for Children's Literature wing of the National Book Trust at Pragati Maidan on the fourth day of the ongoing Delhi Book Fair. Conducted by nine renowned writers -- Paro Anand, Surekha Panandiker, Ranjana Goyal, Vinita Krishna, Madhu Pant, Somdutt Sharma, Shashi Jain, Kusumlata Singh and Vaijanthi Tonpe -- the programme was meant to promote the reading habit among students and encourage them to set up readers' clubs. The writers, who were leading storytellers, conducted four sessions each of 40 minutes' duration as well as an interaction session. During the interaction sessions, children were asked to tell stories. The outstanding child performers were rewarded. The Story-Telling Marathon went on for six hours at a stretch. The National Centre for Children's Literature was set up in 1993 to function as a nodal agency for monitoring, coordinating, planning and aiding the publication of children's literature in various Indian languages. Apart from developing a library-cum-documentation centre and conducting surveys and researches on children's literature, it also organises workshops and exhibitions to promote the reading habit at the school level. -- Devesh K.
