D.P. Singh moves into sole lead

KOZHIKODE: D.P. Singh is looking unstoppable yet again. The most improved player in Indian chess of late, stormed into sole lead at the end of the seventh round of the Calicut FIDE rating all-India open meet at the V.K. Krishna Menon Indoor Stadium here on Thursday.

Singh recorded his seventh win on the trot to stay one point clear of Ram S. Krishnan. K. Ratnakaran, R.R. Laxman, O.T. Anil Kumar, G.N. Gopal and S. Nitin are joint third with 5.5 points each.

The results: Round seven: Naveen S. Hegde 5 lost to D.P. Singh 7; R.R. Laxman 5.5 drew with O.T. Anil Kumar 5.5; Jayanku Chougale 5 lost to Ram S. Krishna 6; K. Ratnakaran 5.5 bt P.M. Chandu advances

Favourites G. Chandu and M.S. Sarath Lal moved into the second round in the boys' U-18 section of the 63rd Trivandrum Open tennis tournament at the TTC courts in Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday.

Chandu overcame B. Azeeb 6-1, 7-5 while Sarath Lal made short work of Swathy Kanth 6-2, 6-1.

State TT squad

The State table tennis teams for the National-ranking tournament (South Zone) to be held in Vijayawada from October 4 to 8, has been announced.

The teams: Men: P.V. Adarsh, M.R. Rajeev, Jai Stephen, R. Raejsh and Galdyson Correa. Boys: Anjelo Porathur and Sarath V. Joy. Juniors: Shyam Narayan, S. Sundar, Anjelo Porathur and Vishnu Narayan. Sub-juniors: S. Sundar, Vishnu Narayan, S. Arjun and Sarath V. Joy.

Women: Aparna D. Nair, M.R. Rajana, Lakshmi Prabha, Anju K. Thomas and Lakshmi Vijayan. Girls: Aparna D. Nair and Anju K. Thomas.

Juniors: Lakshmi Prabha, Adheena K. Lathif, Nice Olive James and Chris Winnie James. Sub-juniors: Sikha Jacob, Maria Rony, Liya Chacko and Anjali S. Nair. Chief coach: Tejesh Kumar Dutta. Assistant coach: B. Sudheendran.

Volleyball tournament

Some of the country's top men's teams, including National League champion BPCL Kochi Refinery, former Federation Cup champion Cochin Port Trust, Indian Navy and Customs will figure in the 11th Pappan Memorial Ernakulam district senior super league volleyball championship which begins at the Nayarambalam Panchayat floodlit stadium, in Vypeen Island, on September 24.

In the women's section, St. Xavier's College (Aluva), SGDC (Nayarambalam) and St. Teresa's College (Ernakulam) are some of the prominent teams expected. The championship concludes on October 1.
