Coimbatore: A cloud of white balloons descended on the grounds of the Government Arts College here on Thursday, officially marking the International Day of Peace. Hundreds of students, many dressed in white, thronged the grounds. Around 25 colleges participated in the celebration. Amidst speeches by the dignitaries, students were also given a chance to voice their opinion on peace. Some of them gave spirited speeches eliciting immediate recognition in the form of applause from the audience. Peace was a very relevant issued in the modern day world and Governments should spend more on educating their youth rather than on procuring nuclear arms, said Anuja, a student of Nirmala College for Women. "The youth have greater power than the older generation, they have the power to change the world," said Rev. William Moses of the CSI Ministry of Peace and Reconciliation, one of the organisers, in his inaugural address. Peace also meant harmony with Nature, said Managing Trustee of Siruthuli, Vanitha Mohan. People had been continuously abusing Nature unmindful of the repercussions of their actions. She appealed to the gathering to join in the crusade to make peace with Nature. Peace is not optional, said M.N. Manjunatha, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Coimbatore Range. "It is a must for progress. All our disputes can be resolved within the framework of the Constitution," he added.
