NBA terms surveys `flawed'

Staff Correspondent

BHOPAL: The Narmada Bachao Andolan on Thursday raised the issue of submergence of villages without rehabilitation and resettlement of villagers affected by the rising water level in the Indira Sagar dam following the September 8 order of the Madhya Pradesh High Court. The order allows the water level in the Indira Sagar reservoir to be raised from 255 metres to 260 metres.

Addressing a press conference here, NBA's Chittaroopa Palit said the rising water level in the dam had started submerging agricultural fields and houses. "The State Government and the Narmada Hydroelectric Development Corporation (NHDC) have arbitrarily excluded around 9,000 families from the land acquisition exercise and the situation has been compounded by the flawed surveys," Ms. Palit said. The flawed surveys and large-scale illegal exclusion of families had put to grave risk a large number of people residing in the submergence zone, she said.
