Bangalore: The Andhra Pradesh Handicrafts Development Corporation Ltd. has been organising "Lepakshi Craft Bazaar" at Palace Grounds, Bangalore, every year for the past five years. This year too, the corporation has organised the craft bazaar to be held at the same venue from September 22 to October 3. The bazaar will be inaugurated by Anjan Raju, chairman of the corporation, at 4 p.m. A press release from the corporation here on Thursday said that the programme was aimed at popularising traditional handicrafts and help improve the earnings of the artisans. As many as 150 artisans from across the country would exhibit and sell their products at the bazaar. They would be provided with stalls with the required amenities for display, lighting, and assistance in sales. Live demonstration of selected crafts had also been organised as part of the programme. By organising exhibitions at prominent places across the country, the corporation had achieved a total sales turnover of Rs. 13.19 crore in 2005-06, as against Rs. 10.50 crore in 2004-05. The annual sales target was fixed at Rs. 45 crore for 2006-07, the release said. The corporation organised training programmes in selected crafts where the production was not commensurate with the demand and also in cases where the craft was less known and languishing for want of adequate patronage and awareness. During the current year, the corporation was conducting training programmes in brass art, nirmal painting, batik painting, silver filigree and cheriyal paintings. The release said that the corporation was participating in the International Trade Fairs to assess the demand for Andhra Pradesh handicrafts and explore the possibility of entering into the export market. The recent participation in fairs organised in the United States., the United Kingdom., Germany and a few other countries had drawn good response and the corporation could secure export orders to the tune of Rs. 7 lakh this current year.
