Navaratri celebrations

Thrissur: Various programmes will be held at the Oorakathamma Thiruvadi temple from September 23 to October 2 as part of Navaratri celebrations. Cochin Devaswom Board President M.A. Krishnanunni will inaugurate the celebrations. The cultural programmes include Carnatic vocal concerts by Trichy Ganesan, Mathangi Satyamurthy and Navaneet Varma; Chakyarkoothu by Kalamandalam Rama Chakyar, devotional music concert by Pradeep Somasundaram, and dance recitals by Varada Kalavedi and Avinissery Kalamandiram Dance School, according to a press release. — Staff Reporter

CSB launches new scheme

Thrissur: The Catholic Syrian Bank (CSB) has launched a new fixed deposit scheme, `CSB Tax Savings Support.' Under the scheme, investments up to Rs.1 lakh are eligible for tax deduction.

The bank will accept deposits in the following categories: CSB Tax Savings Support - Income (interest will be paid monthly/quarterly), CSB Tax Savings Support - Growth (interest gets reinvested). The minimum term will be 5 years. Deposits will get 8 per cent interest. Senior citizens will get 9.25 per cent interest on their deposits, according to a press release. — Staff Reporter

Boy drowns

Thrissur: A 14-year-old boy drowned while swimming with his friends in a pond near Vyasa Vidyapeetam ground in Chittilappilly on Thursday, according to the police. The deceased was identified as Libin, son of Lonappan of Edakkalathur House, a lorry driver. Libin was a student of Sree Ramakrishna Ashram school at Puranattukara. — Staff Reporter

Two arrested on charges of theft

PALAKKAD: Two persons, allegedly involved in a Rs.9 lakh-theft from a whole sale trader at Nurani in the town a couple of days back, were arrested by the Town North Police on Thursday. The arrested are Shabeer, 24, and Naufeer, 26, of Puduppally Theruvu in the town. An amount of Rs.40,000 and a bike were recovered from them. — Staff Reporter

Bus operators' protest

KOCHI: The Ernakulam District Private Bus Operators' Association has protested against the use of `fake' travel concession cards by students of some institutions. M.B. Satyan, general secretary of the association, said the `fake' cards carried by students of an institution in Edapally have been confiscated and complaints registered with the traffic police station. — Staff Reporter

Workshop today

KOLLAM: The Department of Part Time Degree Course attached to the TKM College of Engineering here is organising a workshop on `Engineering profession and human values.' The workshop to be held on Friday will be inaugurated by District Collector B. Srinivas. United Nations consultant for nuclear medicine George Samuel will present the paper on the subject of the workshop. — Staff Reporter

FSETO takes out march

KOLLAM: The district unit of the Federation of State Employees and Teachers Organisation (FSETO) has called for the support of the Central and State Government employees for the nation-wide strike on December 14.

The strike is being called in protest against the alleged anti-employee policies of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government. In a statement here, Basil Joseph, FSETO district secretary, said a taluk-level convention of the State and Central Government employees would be held here on September 26.

The employees took out a march here on Wednesday evening. — Staff Reporter

Farmer commits 'suicide'

Kozhikode: One more debt-ridden farmer allegedly committed suicide in Wayanad on Thursday. Sreedharan, 36, was found dead at Pazhoor Kazhampukunnu, near Sulthan Bathery. The police said Sreedharan allegedly committed suicide by consuming some pesticide. He had obtained loans to the tune of Rs.50,000 from two banks in the district and had also pledged his wife's gold ornaments. Recently he sold his cow to pay bills for the treatment of his wife. He is survived wife and two children, both studying in primary schools. The alleged suicide of Sreedharan is the fifth of such incidents in the district this month. — Staff Reporter

DIC(K) meetings

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The DIC(K) will convene meetings in the districts to explain the clearance given for its merger with the NCP by the State general body. These meetings will be attended by the members of the district general bodies and the mandalam presidents. K.Muraleedharan, president, and the State office-bearers of the party will address these meetings. They will get underway with the meeting in Thiruvananthapuram district on September 27 and end with meetings in Kannur and Kasaragod on October 4. — Special Correspondent

Sudarsan arriving today

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: RSS sarsanghchalak K.S. Sudarsan will arrive in the State capital on Friday on a two-day visit. He will participate in the national seminar on `Cultural Nationalism: Confrontation or Confluence of Cultures', being organised in connection with the birth centenary celebrations of Guruji Golwalker, the second sarsanghchalak of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. He will deliver the keynote address on the theme `Foundations of Nations'. — Staff Reporter

Sabarimala temple closed

PATHANAMTHITTA: The Lord Ayyappa Temple at Sabarimala was closed after the Athazhapuja on Thursday evening, marking the culmination of the five-day monthly rituals in the Malayalam month of Kanni. A Laksharchana was performed at the temple in the forenoon. Tantri Kandararu Rajeevaru performed the rituals. He also performed a Mahasudarsana Homom, Mahamrutyunjaya Homom and Sarppabali at the Sannidhnam as part of the atonement rituals prescribed by the Devaprasnam. The temple would be reopened on October 17. — Staff Reporter

Honour for scientist

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: P.T. Ajith Kumar, scientist and head of the Holography Division of the Centre for Development of Imaging Technology (C-DIT) has been invited by the Russian Academy of Sciences for a joint programme on holographic data storage. The invitation from the Institute of Automation and Electrometry under the Russian Academy of Sciences is based on a research paper presented by Dr. Ajith Kumar in September, 2005, at the International Holography Conference held in Moscow. The paper was on development of photopolymer-based holographic variable data storage. — Special Correspondent
