CHENNAI: District units of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam will hold negotiations with the partners in the Democratic Progressive Alliance to decide on seats to be contested in the local body elections.

A meet of DMK district secretaries, presided over by Chief Minister and DMK president M. Karunanidhi, endorsed this view.

It was felt that given the large number of seats to be shared, the district would form a viable unit for negotiations. Also, since the posts of Municipal Chairperson and Mayors would be decided only after the elections, there was no need for discussion among leaders of parties at this stage.

Apex committee formed

The DPA leaders had met at the DMK headquarters on Wednesday and had discussed the issue. Also, each of the parties had formed an apex committee to ensure better coordination among the partners.

DMK leaders said that the question of sharing heads of urban local bodies — Municipal Chairman and Mayor — would be taken up only after the elections. This was because elections to these posts were being held indirectly and could be decided on after a clear idea of the number of seats won by the combine emerged.

Senior party men and Ministers attended the district secretaries' meeting.
