CHENNAI: Some ran to the finishing post, while others threw a soft ball, and eventually all went home with a prize at the Spastics Society of Tamil Nadu (SPASTN). The SPASTN campus at Taramani was alive and vibrant on Thursday as people of all age groups participated in several sports events all at the same time. Over 650 students from the three SPASTN campuses at Taramani, Royapuram and Ayanavaram respectively were present at the venue in white T-shirts to participate in the 27 events organised. Jagadish Ramamoorthi, CEO, Allsec Technologies, which sponsored the programme, said, "Reaching out to the community is a vital part of Allsec's organisational strategy. Allsec is sensitive to corporate responsibility and social investing. Additionally, there is direct involvement of the employees in the implementation of the projects." Annie Shyam, Director, SPASTN, said Allsec Technologies had understood the fact that children with disabilities are also capable of participating in and enjoying sportsactivities. "Allsec's involvement in SPASTN has added a new dimension in promoting and strengthening programmes for our children," she said. The top award of the event at SPASTN this year was the Allsec Trophy, for which all three SPASTN centres competed. Allsec volunteers also participated in the events. SPASTN was started in 1981 by Shanthi Sadiq Ali to fulfil the need for a special school for children with cerebral palsy. The school was first started in Central Chennai with six children and two teachers. Later, five acres of land was donated by then Chief Minister, M.G. Ramachandran. Today over 1,600 children with cerebral palsy and multiple disabilities, and their families are part of the institution. The Allsec Rolling Trophy and the SPASTN Trophy went to the Taramani centre for scoring the maximum points. The trophies were distributed by Crazy Mohan, playwright. Mr. Ramamoorthi gave away the prizes to the winners.
