Brisk sale of application forms for local body polls

Staff Reporter

Nomination filing may pick up from today in view of ``ammavasai''

TAMBARAM : Sale of application forms for the post of ward members of village and town panchayats and councillors of municipalities has been going on briskly in the southern suburbs of Chennai. More than 750 application forms are reported to have been sold in the past two days.

However, only two applications for the post of wards members of village panchayats — Kottivakkam and Vengaivaasal — have been received, officials said, adding that the beginning of nominations was likely to pick up from Friday as it was considered auspicious and it also coincided with `ammavaasai.'

There are 11 town panchayats in Tambaram taluk: Nandambakkam, Tiruneermalai, Meenambakkam, Perungudi, Sholinganallur, Pallikaranai, Sembakkam, Madambakkam, Chitlapakkam, Perungalathur and Peerkankaranai. Of the total 168 wards, 16 are reserved for SC (General), 12 for SC (Women) and 44 for Women (General). There are 2,11,709 voters in these 11 town panchayats.

There are also six municipalities in this taluk: Pammal, Anakaputhur, Pallavaram, Alandur, Ullagaram-Puzhuthivakkam and Tambaram with an electorate of 4,14,627. Of the total 180 wards, 12 are reserved for SC (General), 10 for SC (Women) and 57 for Women (General).

At the last meetings of municipal councils, there were heated debates over reservation of wards based on rotation. However, the protests fizzled out over a couple of weeks with councillors deciding to field women relatives from the wards from where they had been contesting regularly.

On Thursday, former Rural Industries Minister and Alandur MLA B. Valarmathi chaired a meeting in Tambaram where more than 2,000 aspirants from her party, All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, submitted their applications to contest as councillors on the party ticket.

The party's list is expected to be finalised on Friday. The meeting saw candidates from Tambaram, Alandur and Tirupporur (Reserve) Assembly constituencies filing their nominations to the party leaders.

On Friday, the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam would be conducting a similar meeting at Tambaram.
