Paediatric AIDS regimen

GUNTUR: More than 2,000 HIV-positive children in Andhra Pradesh will be given treatment with effect from November 14 at Guntur, Tirupati and Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh State Aids Control Society Additional Project Director Kalidas has said.

A team of the APSACS, Bill Gates Foundation, Vasavya Mahila Mandali, and NACO visited the Government General Hospital here on Thursday to assess the facilities for starting the all-India programme. Currently an AIDS clinic is running in the GGH for the adult population and about 2,000 positives were being given medicines as part of life-long treatment regimen.

This treatment would be extended to the children below 15 years, Dr. Kalidas said.

Mahila Mandali executive secretary Rushmi Samaram, said the cooperation of the local organisation would also be taken in implementing this project and there was no upper limit for number of children to be treated. The State Coordinator of Foundation Balaram Babu said that CD4 count would be taken and clinical assessment done before beginning the treatment.
