Hyderabad Hi-Tech Textile Park in limbo

Promoters claim State not helping in creating infrastructure

  • The foundation stone for the Rs. 415-crore project was laid two-and-a-half years ago
  • It is expected to provide direct employment to 5,000 and indirect employment to 10,000
  • The Government is yet to provide approach roads, water and power connections

HYDERABAD: Promoters of the much-publicised Hyderabad Hi-Tech Textile Park (HHTP) are facing several difficulties in developing the necessary infrastructure for the venture.

More than two and a half years after the foundation stone was laid for the park, involving investment of over Rs. 415 crores, the promoters are still doing rounds of various Government departments for developing basic amenities like approach roads and water and power connections.

    Project details

Located at Cheguru village in Kothur mandal of Mahabubnagar district, 60 km from here, the park will have 2,000 state-of-the-art shuttle-less looms with a daily production capacity of two lakh metres of cloth in the first phase and additional two lakh metres later. It is expected to provide direct employment to 5,000 people and indirect employment to 10,000 in the first phase. Promoters claim help from Government has not been forthcoming in setting up the venture. "The support is confined to paper," HHTP Chairman Narasaiah R. Uppala said.

Mr. Narasaiah said the promoters, who formed a special purpose vehicle for the project, had to face hardships right from the acquisition of the land. "Despite the frequent changes in the land prices, we could acquire 150 acres from farmers and efforts are under way to secure another 30 acres. But the problem now is developing infrastructure," he said.

There had been no action from the Government on the promoters' application submitted in October last for single-window clearance. The HHTP authorities were disappointed when no senior Government officials turned up for a seminar in which an Italian team participated to explore opportunities for financing textile infrastructure projects.
