Awareness drive on helmet for pillion riders

Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: The city police will soon undertake a campaign for educating people about the need of pillion riders of two-wheelers wearing helmets.

"The rule making it compulsory for the pillion rider to wear helmet is already there in the Motor Vehicle Act," Traffic Additional Commissioner A.K. Khan told The Hindu .

The police would enlighten and convince people about the helmet rule for pillion riders instead of suddenly enforcing it, he said on Tuesday.

An analysis of fatal accidents involving two-wheelers in city revealed that 35 per cent of victims in such accidents are pillion riders, Mr. Khan explained.

Moreover, almost all metropolitan cities in the country are strictly implementing the rule to bring down deaths due to road accidents.
