Fisherman goes missing

KOCHI: A fisherman, struck by lightning, went missing as he fell from his country boat into the Perumpadappu backwaters on Thursday morning. Muralidharan, 47, of Konam near Palluruthy, and another man were fishing near the Palluruthy bridge when the mishap occurred. The police and Fire and Rescue Services launched a search. - Staff Reporter

Alzheimer's Day

KOCHI: A seminar was organised here on Thursday to observe the World Alzheimer's Day. A number of experts spoke on the difficult situations that the family members go through when a member of the family undergoes a personality change because of the disease and how the caregivers have to be patient with the needs of the patient. The seminar was organised by the Alzheimer's and Related Disorders Society of India. A public function was also held to create awareness about the disease. At Lisie Hospital, the Neurology Department held a camp on the occasion. Reji Paul, Head of the Department, and Ferosh Khan spoke on the occasion. - Staff Reporter

Advocacy competitions

Kochi: A three-day National Trial Advocacy Competitions will be organised here jointly by the National University of Advanced Legal Studies (NUALS), Kochi, and Surana and Surana International Attorneys, Chennai, from September 22. According to the Registrar of NUALS, students of law from different parts of the country will participate in the competition, which aimed at improving the capabilities of law students in examination of witnesses in trial courts. - Staff Reporter

Bus operators' protest

KOCHI: The Ernakulam District Private Bus Operators' Association has protested against the use of `fake' travel concession cards by students of some institutions. M.B. Satyan, general secretary of the Association, said here on Thursday that the fake cards carried by students of an institution in Edapally were confiscated and complaints registered with the traffic police and the Regional Transport Office. - Staff Reporter

Kochi: The musical night by MACTA Federation and MACTA Musicians Union scheduled for Saturday has been postponed to October 2, says a press release issued by Vinayan, general secretary of MACTA. - Staff Reporter
