Three nabbed for auto-thefts

NEW DELHI: Three persons have been arrested by the Anti-Auto Theft Squad (AATS) of the South Delhi police for allegedly stealing vehicles and selling them in the open market as genuine vehicles.

The accused allegedly used to buy the "total loss" vehicles from insurance agents along with their papers and then tamper with the engine and chassis numbers of the stolen vehicles making them appear as "genuine".

Acting on a tip-off, the AATS arrested two of the accused, Nasir and Rashid, at Lajpat Nagar in South Delhi this past Tuesday. At their instance, the police arrested Nafees Baig at Meerut in Uttar Pradesh. In all, the police recovered five stolen luxury vehicles.

The police said Nafees, along with his accomplices Shahid and Shahnawaz, had put together "an assembly line" for tampering with the engine and chassis numbers of the stolen vehicles. The police claim to have recovered equipment used by the accused in this connection. During interrogation, the accused allegedly confessed to having sold at least 35 stolen vehicles showing them as genuine. Efforts are now on to trace the absconding accused, Shahid and Shahnawaj.
