Thiruvananthapuram: The State Government has promised enhanced Plan fund allocation for the Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi city corporations to help them meet their financial commitments for the projects taken up under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM). The assurance was extended by Finance Minister Thomas Isaac at a function held at the office of Minister for Local Self Government Paloli Mohammed Kutty to hand over the City Development Plan(CDP) prepared by the Corporation. The two Corporations in the State are together expected to net a total package of Rs.3,000 crores as grant-in-aid from the Central Government under the JNNURM. While the Kochi Corporation has submitted a Rs.10,700 crore-plan, the CDP for Thiruvananthapuram amounts to Rs.7417 cr. The CDPs are designed to reflect the development needs of the cities for the next 20 years. They were prepared after extensive consultations with experts and user groups. Officials informed the Minister that the work on preparation of detailed project reports for the JNNURM would start soon. The City Development Plans for Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi will be vetted by the Academic Staff College of India, Hyderabad, one of the three national-level nodal agencies for the mission programme.
