Coimbatore: The distance education courses should be increased and restructured to attract more number of students. At present, Bharathiar University has negligible number of distance learners compared to other universities. This should change, said its Vice-Chancellor, G. Thiruvasagam. He was chairing a meeting of the Senate of the Bharathiar University here on Friday. Questions pertaining to various topics were raised by members, who had come from the affiliated colleges of the university. There were deliberations on topics related to distance education, internal assessment, college affiliation, protection to university properties, appointment and maintenance of security personnel and meeting of the Audit and Accounts Committee. Speaking on distance education, the Vice-Chancellor said that the Centre for Distance Education in the city would have a new Public Relations Office to attend to the students' queries and help them with the choice of courses. With regard to continuing internal assessment in colleges, he said that there were both difficulties and advantages in having internal assessment system. A decision would be taken in consultation with the concerned committee in the coming academic year, Dr. Thiruvasagam said. In response to a query regarding the number of audit objections that were pending, he said that out of the 448 audit objections in 2005-06, 18 had been dropped and 430 were pending. He promised that in future, the Audit and Accounts Committee would meet frequently to clear the audit objections. Some common points were reiterated by the members and the VC expressed his concern over the same and said that necessary action would be taken when and where required. He promised that a new Head of Department for the university library would be appointed in the near future. Teachers who come to the meeting with problems and questions, should themselves come forth with solutions. "We want the administration of the University to be transparent because we are accountable to the people. That is why we have invited the press today for the first time in the history of Bharathiar University," he said.
