dated September 23, 1956: Atomic Energy Agency

An informal target date of October 26 was agreed upon on September 21 for completing work on the draft statute of the International Atomic Energy Agency. The statute, drawn up by 12 sponsoring nations in Washington last spring, is before an 81-nation conference meeting at the United Nations headquarters in New York for adoption. The conference, which began on September 20, will debate the statute, approe or modify it, open it for signature and set up a preparatory commission to bring the new Agency into being. The target date, along with a plan for a fie-day work week, was agreed upon by the conference's Co-ordination Committee. Senor Joao Carlos Muniz of Brazil and Mr. Pael Winkler of Czechosloakia, who were elected President and ice-President of the conference on September 20, were chosen on September 21 as Chairman and ice-Chairman of the Co-ordination Committee.
