Eco awareness in Sanskrit literature

Staff Reporter

GUNTUR: The Hindu College Sanskrit Department will hold a national seminar on `Environmental Awareness in Sanskrit and Telugu Literature' to bring out the mention of these themes much before the modern science was aware of it.

The seminar, first of its kind in Sanskrit, will be organised on November 3 and 4 and in the run-up to the event, the department will organise an essay writing and poetry competition in Sanskrit in globally relevant themes for undergraduate and post-graduate students, seminar director D.N. Deekshit said on Friday. Literature in its Sanskrit synonym means sahitya - for the good of society. Even cloud-seeding has a root in the Indian ritual of rishis performing yagnas for rain. There are hundreds of instances of our love for ecology and conserving the nature in Mahabharata, he observed.

Cash prize of Rs. 1,116 would be given to the best entries in both the essay writing and poetry competitions. Further details can be had from director over the phone no. 9440033563.
