Procession taken out

HASSAN: The Hassan District Federation of Progressive Forum on Friday took out a procession here in protest against the remarks by Minister for Higher Education D.H. Shankaramurthy on Tipu Sultan. Members of Dalit Sangharsh Samithi, Democratic Youth Federation of India, Students Federation of India, Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha and Bahujan Samaj Party, who participated in the procession, which commenced from the Hemavathi statue, formed a "human chain" at Narasimharaja Circle and assembled on the premises of the office of the Deputy Commissioner. They later handed over a memorandum. — Staff Correspondent

Three die in accident

HASSAN: Three persons were killed and two, including a five-year-old girl were injured, when the car in which they were travelling collided with a gas tanker near Bharatanavalli in Alur taluk on National Highway 48 on Friday. The police gave the names of the dead as Mohsina (35), Kajol Mukharjee (30) and Ritu Mukharjee (29) from Bangalore. While Mohsina and Kajol died on the spot, Ritu Mukharjee died on the way to hospital. People staged a dharna near Bharatanavalli in protest against the apathy of the authorities in widening the road. They withdrew the dharna after an assurance from senior police officials and the National Highway authorities that it would be tackled on priority. — Staff Correspondent

Five per cent DA hike for government staff

Belgaum: Close on the heels of Centre's decision to give additional five per cent Dearness Allowance to its employees, the State Government has decided to follow suit.

Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa said here on Friday that State Government employees would also get a DA increase of five per cent with retrospective effect from July 1, 2006, which would entail an expenditure of Rs. 263.73 crore on the Government. — Staff Correspondent

Two burned to death in Bagalkot district

BIJAPUR: Two persons were burned to death at Janmatti village in Bilagi taluk of Bagalkot district on Thursday night.

Police identified the victims as Uma Hiremath, 25 and Shrimanth Giriyannavar. Uma, whose clothes caught fire while she was cooking, started screaming for help. Her neighbour Shrimanth rushed to her rescue, but he too was engulfed in the inferno. By the time firemen arrived from Bilagi town the house was already gutted. — Staff Correspondent

MLA sees lapses in convening session

Bangalore: The Congress MLA Basavaraj Rayaraddi on Friday alleged that in convening a session of the legislature in Belgaum, the Government was guilty of breach of privilege of the legislature and disrespect to the Constitution and the office of the Governor.

Releasing a letter he has written to Legislative Assembly Speaker Krishna on the matter, the former Minister said none of the actions taken to convene the session had the approval of the Speaker, who was abroad. Deputy Speaker Gopalakrishna had not been informed of any of these developments.

He said the Speaker should have called a meeting with Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly N. Dharam Singh and other floor leaders before deciding the date and venue of the session. — Staff Reporter

Ramesh Jigajinagi bereaved

BIJAPUR: Shoba Jigajinagi, 50, wife of Ramesh Jigajinagi, Bharatiya Janata Party MP for Chikkodi, passed away in the early hours on Friday. She is survived by her husband and two sons.

She was diabetic and died in a private hospital in Sholapur. She was laid to rest on the family farm at Bhutnal village on the outskirts of Bijapur in the afternoon.

Minister for Food and Civil Supplies Govind Karjol; Basanagouda R. Patil Yatnal and P.C. Gaddigoudar, MPs; and M.B. Patil, Appasahab Pattanashetti, Ashok Shabadi, R.K Rathod and Murgesh Nirani, MLAs, were present to pay their last respects. — Staff Correspondent

Dasara exhibition opens today

MYSORE: The Dasara Exhibition at Doddakere Maidan will be held for 76 days starting from Saturday. A release said during the exhibition, cultural programmes, including classical, folk and light music, devotional songs and dance performances would be organised. Training for civil services examination
