Staff Reporter

Bharathiar University has negligible number of distance learners compared to other universities Audit and Accounts Committee will meet frequently to clear the audit objections "We want the administration of the University to be transparent because we are accountable to the people"

Coimbatore: The number of distance education courses should be increased and restructured to attract more number of students, said Bharathiar University Vice-Chancellor G. Thiruvasagam.

At present the university has negligible number of distance learners compared to other universities. This should change, he said while chairing the Senate meeting of the university here on Friday.

Speaking on distance education, the VC said the Centre for Distance Education in the city would have a new Public Relations Office to answer the students' queries and help them with the choice of courses.

With regard to the matter of continuing or discontinuing internal assessment in colleges, he said that there were both difficulties and advantages in having internal assessment system. "A decision would be taken in consultation with the concerned committee in the forthcoming academic year," Dr. Thiruvasagam said.

In response to a query regarding the number of audit objections that were pending, he said out of the 448 audit objections in 2005-06, 18 had been dropped and 430 were pending. He promised that in future the Audit and Accounts Committee would meet frequently to clear the audit objections.

Some common points were reiterated by the members and the VC expressed his concern over the same and said necessary action would be taken.

He promised that a new Head of Department for the university library would be appointed soon, a PR office would be established in the Centre for Distance Education and whatever other grievances were projected would be sorted out by the next meeting of the Senate.

Questions pertaining to various topics were raised by members who had come from the affiliated colleges of the university. There were deliberations on topics of distance education, internal assessment, college affiliation, protection to university properties, appointment and maintenance of security personnel and meeting of the Audit and Accounts Committee.

"Teachers who come to the meeting with problems and questions, should themselves come forth with solutions. We want the administration of the University to be transparent. That is why we have invited the press today for the first time in the history of Bharathiar University", he said.
