INL backs Government on admissions issue

Staff Reporter

KOLLAM: P.M.A. Salam, general secretary of the Indian National League (INL) State unit, has said that steps taken by the Left Democratic Front Government for regulating admissions to self-financing professional colleges has the wholehearted support of a majority among the backward communities.

At a press conference here on Friday, he said the Constitutional rights were for the poor among the minority communities and not for those from these sections who were engaged in commercialising the educational sector.

Mr. Salam said that had the previous United Democratic Front Government taken appropriate steps when the first communal riot broke out at Marad, another carnage would not have taken place. Whenever that front came to power, the State witnessed serious communal problems.

The present Government had addressed issues with a positive commitment, he said.

Siraj Ibrahim Sait, National Youth League president, said the Indo-U.S. civilian nuclear treaty sacrificed the security of the country. The United Progressive Alliance Government should show the courage to make appropriate amendments to the provisions in the treaty.

INL vice-president A.A. Amin was present.
