Two killed in accident

KADAPA: Two persons were killed and 11 others were injured when a private bus going from Chittoor to Hyderabad hit a parapet at the second curve and ran down Guvvalacheruvu ghat road on Kadapa-Rayachoti road late on Thursday night.

While Subrahmanyam Naik of Yelamanda village in Chittoor district and another person were killed, the bus driver escaped unhurt. Chengalrayudu of Chittoor and Venkataramana of Ramapuram, who were severely injured, were rushed to Kurnool Government hospital. Nine other injured were admitted to RIMS here.— Staff Reporter

Tourism Day competitions

ANANTAPUR: The Department of Tourism will conduct essay-writing and painting competitions for high school students in the district on the "Importance of historic and tourist places in the district" on the occasion of World Tourism Day on September 27. The contests will be held in Arts College Drama Hall on September 24 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Students may enrol their names in with District Public Relations Office in Sainagar by September 23 .— Staff Reporter

Directive to SPs

HYDERABAD: Additional Director-General of Police (Legal) M. Bhaskar, on behalf of DGP Swaranjit Sen, on Friday directed the Superintendents of Police to enforce the Andhra Pradesh Animals and Birds Sacrifices (Prohibition) Act, on the occasion of Vijaya Dasami (Ayudha Pooja).

He asked them to take action against those who violate the act, which prohibits sacrifice of any animal or bird for the purpose of any religious worship. - Special Correspondent

SSC merit scholarships

HYDERABAD: The Commissioner of Intermediate Education has invited applications from eligible students for award of SSC national merit scholarships for 2006-2007. Students with 561 marks belonging to Andhra University, 562 marks belonging to Osmania University and 559 marks belonging to Sri Venkateswara University have been tentatively selected for the scholarship.

Forms should reach the Commissioner's Office at Nampally on or before November 30. - Staff Reporter

V. P. Singh coming

HYDERABAD: Former Prime Minister V. P. Singh will be the special guest at the valedictory of the silver jubilee celebrations of `Prajasakti', a Telugu daily, being held here on September 24. State I&PR Minister Mohammed Ali Shabbir, Narayana Dutta, Editor, `Ganasakthi', V. Dakshina Murthy, Editor, `Desabhimani' and V. Parameswaran, Editor, `Thikkadhir' will attend.

Set up as a single edition in Vijayawada in 1981, `Prajasakti' is currently published from nine centres in the State. — Special Correspondent

Ramzan calendar

HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy released the `Ramzan Calendar' at his chambers in the Secretariat on Thursday. The special calendar has timing details of `Sahr' and `Iftar'. Dr. Reddy said the Government had already issued orders to allow Muslim employees to leave their office by 4 p.m. during the festival period. - Staff Reporter

Flour variety released

HYDERABAD: Agriculture and Civil Supplies Minister N. Raghuveera Reddy on Thursday released the latest variety of flour marketed by the State Civil Supplies Corporation through the public distribution system. The pouches costing Rs. 10 were available in fair price shops of Hyderabad, Ranga Reddy and Warangal districts as a pilot project. Mr. Reddy said the variety was rich in folic acid, Vitamin A and micronutrients. It would be available to both white and pink cardholders. There is no limit on the quantum of purchase. - Special Correspondent

EECC-2006 entrance

TIRUPATI: EECC-2006, the entrance examination for admission to the three-year correspondence-cum-contact courses in engineering at diploma level in Government Polytechnics, will be conducted at SV Government Polytechnic, Tirupati, on October 15 (Sunday) from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. Application form can be had from the SVGP office on submission of a DD for Rs. 350 drawn in favour of `The Secretary, State Board of Technical Education and Training', payable at Hyderabad. Man kills daughter?

NALGONDA: A tribal, Lunawath Murtya (38) of Rajunaik thanda of Suryapet mandal, allegedly killed his 12-year-old daughter Kalyani, a seventh class student, on Thursday night.

According to M. Tirupatanna, Inspector, Murtya drugged her before throttling her to death as he developed a suspicion on his wife's character.

"He has been under the impression that he is not the father of the girl. Unable to bear the torture at the hands of her husband, the girl's mother deserted him recently," the Inspector said. - Staff Reporter

Para legal exam time changed

Sangareddy: Para legal examination to be conducted this Sunday will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The examination time has been changed as it clashed with the B.Ed examination slated to be held on the same day, according to a press release. Joint Collector Vani Mohan said the appointment of these legal hands would help in solving land related issues pending in Medak, Narayankhed, Zaheerabad, Siddipet, Dubbaka, Kohir, Gajwel, Andole, Kondapk, Nyalkal, Patancheru, Sangareddy, Jherasangham, Pulkal, Ramayampet, Alladurg, Hathnoora, Chegunta, Toopran, Papannapet, Jinnaram, Narsapur and Ramachandrapuram mandals. - Staff Reporter

Constables suspended

ADILABAD: One Armed Reserve head constable and two constables were suspended following the escape of two undertrials from their custody on Friday. The prisoners -- Veerabhadram and Krishna of Warangal district -- were involved in a case of ganja smuggling and arrested last year. Veerabhadram and Krishna were admitted to a hospital for treatment to different ailments. On Friday morning, sentry K. Sawai Ram went to answer nature's call without alerting head constable Prakash and constable K. Rajalingu who were sleeping. Noticing that there were no guards, the duo escaped.

Two killed in road accident

Sangareddy: Thirty-year-old Karan Singh Rai of Lalithpur in Jhansi and his assistant Naresh (18), also from the same village, were killed on the spot when an APSRTC bus rammed into the culvert they were sitting on at national highway seven near Kalakkal. The accident occurred during the wee hours of Friday.
