Need for second green revolution: Minister

N. Raghuveera Reddy

HYDERABAD: Agriculture Minister N. Raghuveera Reddy has asked farm scientists to undertake research that is in tune with the Government's aim of providing maximum benefit to ryots.

"Let your research be more scientific, which will go a long way in alleviating the sufferings of farmers in the State," he told the valedictory of the diamond jubilee celebrations of the College of Agriculture, Acharya N.G. Ranga Agricultural University (ANGRAU) here on Friday.

Top priority

Mr. Reddy said the Government was according top priority to agriculture and irrigation. The immediate task on hand was to take up bio-diesel cultivation in a big way. The Minister stated that thrust was being given to agriculture by setting up an agri-polytechnic in each district. Additionally, three horticulture colleges would be established. Hailing the contribution of ANGRAU, he said the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) had agreed to set up a centre here to consolidate its activities. He noted that the university's Water Technology Centre would help the Government's efforts to conserve water.

Major Irrigation Minister Ponnala Lakshamaiah underscored the need for a second green revolution, with ANGRAU playing a key role in it. He said thrust should be given to enhancing farm production. G. Chinna Reddy, MLA and an alumni of the university, said there was urgent need to take up massive seed production.

Vice-Chancellor S. Raghuvardhan Reddy explained the university's plans. Former principals and faculty members were felicitated. Mr. Raghuveera Reddy laid the foundation for the diamond jubilee block.
