District to organise cultural festival

50-day fete to celebrate jubilee of State formation


  • Proposal to build Golden Jubilee memorial
  • A number of development programmes are also on the agenda

    KOZHIKODE: The 50th anniversary of the formation of Kerala State will be celebrated in the district with different programmes for 50 days, from November 1.

    Forest Minister Benoy Viswom and Industries Minister Elamaram Karim participated in the meeting held at the Collectorate here on Friday to discuss the details of the programmes.

    Seminars, poetry sessions, rural art festivals, cinema festivals, and sports programmes are some of the items on the agenda.

    The festivities will be organised on a joint basis involving school and college students, libraries, cultural organisations, non-Government organisations, industrial establishments and neighbourhood groups, Mr. Viswom said.

    Besides the items on the calendar prepared by the State Government, the district will have projects for building a Golden Jubilee memorial, and setting up of a `Smritivanam'.

    A number of development programmes are also on the agenda, including the reopening of the Tiruvannur Cotton Mill, and the launching of a comprehensive programme for paddy cultivation in 2,000 acres under the aegis of the district panchayat.

    Funds

    A sum of Rs.10, 000 each has been earmarked for panchayats to conduct the programme. Municipality (Rs. 50,000); Corporation and District Panchayat (Rs. 3 lakh); Block Panchayats (Rs. 25,000); and District (Rs.1 lakh).

    An organising committee has been set up with Mr. Viswom as chairman; district panchayat president K.P. Kunahmmedkutty as convener; and District Collector A. Jayathilak as treasurer, to oversee the conduct of the programmes.

    As many as 10 members from the district will attend the resource persons camp to be held in Thiruvananthapuram on September 29 and 30.

    U. A. Khader, writer; Theruvath Raman, journalist; vice-chairman of Kerala Sahitya Akademi U.K. Kumaran; Thayat Balan social activist; chairperson of Koyilandy Municipality K. Dasan; and panchayat secretary V. P. Kuttysankaran were present at the meeting.
