Asiad selection put off again

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The national selectors were caught in an awkward position as they continued their discussion about the composition of the trap team for the second day running and thus had to delay the announcement of the Indian shooting contingent for the Asian Games by another day.

Though performance in the three selection trials was announced as the sole criterion, it was difficult for the selection committee of the National Rifle Association of India to leave out reigning World and Asian champion Manavjit Singh Sandhu, who could not figure in the top three in trap after the trials.

Despite keeping Manavjit and Mansher Singh in the squad, the selectors felt they should not stick to self-imposed stipulations and were trying to bring in Anwer Sultan.

Air rifle world champion Abhinav Bindra was exempted from taking the trials as he has been undergoing rehabilitation programme to set right a painful back, and been selected though his participation in Doha is still doubtful.

The likely team: Men: Pistol: Samaresh Jung, Bapu Vanzare, Zakir Khan, Pemba Tamang, Vijay Kumar, Rahul Panwar, Jaspal Rana, Ronak Pandit and Deepak Sharma. Rifle: Abhinav Bindra, Gagan Narang, P.T. Raghunath, Sanjeev Rajput, Imran Hassan Khan, Suresh Singh Rathod and Sushil Ghaley. Shotgun: Trap: Manavjit Singh Sandhu, Mansher Singh and Anwer Sultan; Doubletrap: Lt. Col. Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, Ronjan Sodhi and Vikram Bhatnagar; Skeet: A.D. Peoples, Mairaj Ahmad Khan and Man Singh.

Women: Pistol: Sonia Rai, Harveen Srao and Shweta Choudhary. Rifle: Tejaswini Sawant, Suma Shirur, Avneet Kaur Sidhu, Deepali Deshpande and Anjali Bhagwat.
