Sinka in last four

MADURAI: P.K. Sinka of Central Zone entered the men's singles semifinals of the inter-Airport Authority of India badminton tournament organised by the Madurai Airport, defeating M. Jacob of South Zone 21-17, 21-16 at the M.G.R. Race Course Indoor Stadium here on Friday.

Earlier, South Zone had mixed fortunes in the team events. It won the men's title defeating Central Zone 3-1 and lost to West 2-0 in the women's final.

The results: Team championships (final): Men: South Zone 3 bt Central Zone 1 (M.K.P. Singamani lost to P.K. Sinka 21-16, 18-21, 20-22; K.R. Ratesh bt Parul 21-15, 21-2; Singamani & Venkataraman bt Parul & Sunil 21-18, 21-10; M. Jacob bt Sunil 14-21, 21-12, 21-16). Women: West Zone 2 bt South Zone 0 (Sandhya bt Nalini 21-13, 22-20; Sandhya & Mary bt Nalini & Vanaja 18-21, 21-13, 21-15).

YMCA CPE triumphs

YMCA CPE, Chennai won both the men's and women's volleyball titles, while Maruthi CPE, Coimbatore and host Dr. Sivanthi Adithanar CPE won the men's and women's kabaddi titles respectively in the TN Physical Education and Sports University sports meet at Tiruchendur on Friday.

Men: Volleyball: YMCA CPE bt Maruthi CPE 25-21, 25-15, 23-25, 25-19; YMCA bt Dr. Sivanthi CPE 25-19, 25-10, 26-24; Dr. Sivanthi bt Maruthi 32-30, 13-25, 25-18, 13-25, 15-7. Kabaddi: Maruthi 62 bt YMCA 32; Maruthi 50 bt Dr. Sivanthi 10; YMCA 48 bt Dr. Sivanthi 30.

Easy win for SIT

Off-spinner Kumar's five-wicket haul helped Sethu Institute of Technology, Kariapatti defeat Madura College by 60 runs to clinch the India Cements Trophy in the district-level inter-collegiate cricket tournament organised by the MDCA at the American College ground in Madurai on Friday.

The scores: SIT 165 for seven in 30 overs (Mahesh 32, Arockiaraj 29, Krishnakumar three for 27) bt Madura College 105 in 23.4 overs (Murali 25, Krishnakumar 30, Kumar five for 20).

Sethu blanks Nehru

Sethu FC blanked Nehru FC 4-0 in the Madurai DFA `A' division football league for the Hi-Tech Arai Trophy at the Madura College ground on Friday. Sam Christidoss (2), Shajahan and Navamurthy scored the goals.

Dominic stars

A Dominic Joe of host, Sethu Institute of Technology (SIT) won the gold in men's high jump, clearing 1.70m, in the Anna University Zone-9 inter-engineering athletics meet at S.I.T. ground, Kariapatti near Madurai on Friday.
