D.P. Singh wins title

KOZHIKODE: D.P. Singh won the Calicut FIDE rating all-India open chess tournament with a round to spare here on Friday.

Easy for Vijaykumar

At Thiruvananthapuram, veteran V.K. Vijayakumar beat M.R. Rajendran 6-2, 6-1 in the men's singles second round of the 63rd Trivandrum Open tennis tournament.

Silver Hills wins

At Kozhikode, host Silver Hills HSS beat Alphonza EMS, Thararassery, 32-15 in the opening match of the Silver Hills Trophy all-Kerala inter-school basketball tournament on Friday.

Classic CC in final

At Thiruvananthapuram, a fine all round performance by S. Asha (56 and three for 12) helped Classic Cricket Club score a 49-run win over LNCPE, Kariyavattom and enter the final of the Thiruvananthapuram senior women's cricket championship on Friday.

The scores: Classic CC 119 in 22.3 overs (S. Asha 56, Amina four for 10) bt LNCPE 70 in 21.4 overs (Sareena 32, S.Asha three for 12, Rakhi three for 22).

Century by Sambasiva

At Thiruvananthapuram, a fine century by Sambasiva Sharma (117) carried South Zone to a position of respectability against North Zone on the opening day of the three-day inter-zone under-22 cricket match on Friday.Vineeth made 63 as South Zone was 247 for seven at stumps.

The scores: South Zone 247 for seven in 74 overs (Sambasiva Sharma 117, Vineeth 63) v Central Zone.

Thiruvananthapuram in command

At Kottayam, Thiruvananthapuram, having scored 100 for four by stumps, was on the threshold of gaining the vital first innings lead against Pathanamthitta on the opening day of the second round matches of the South Zone inter-District under-15 cricket tournament on Friday.

Batting first, Pathanamthitta was shot out for 111 in 50.3 overs, with R. Jithin and Aditya sharing the bowling honours for Thiruvananthapuram with hauls of three for 18 and three for 33 respectively.

The scores: Pathanamthitta 111 in 50.3 overs (Rahul Raj 35, R.Jithin three for 18, Aditya three for 33) vs. Thiruvananthapuram 110 for four in 49 overs, at the Nehru Stadium
