Khade rules on day two

WUNDERKIND: Veerdhaval Khade rewrote two records on Friday.

BANGALORE: It rained records at the BAC pool here as the second day of the LIC senior National championships spawned five new marks with Veerdhaval Khade rewriting two of those with a brilliant display.

Khade's coach Nihar Ameen had dubbed him the "brightest prospect" of Indian swimming on the eve of the meet, and the strapping 15-year-old from Kohlapur proved him right as he smashed his own 200m freestyle mark of 1:57.32s set at the last Nationals, clocking 1:56.03s.

He wasn't content with that effort as he signed off the day by winning the 50m butterfly in 26.10s, lowering K. Rajiv's three-year old mark of 26.27s.

"I'm happy with the way the meet is going for me," said Khade, who had won the 50m freestyle event on Thursday. "Bettering the 200m freestyle record was very much on my mind and I guess I swam well," he added.

Rehan wins gold

Meanwhile, Rehan Poncha of Karnataka opened his account with a new meet record (4:38.55s) and won gold in the 400m individual medley.

Earlier in the day, Karnataka's quartet of Rehan Poncha, Srinand Srinivas, Aaron D'Souza and Rohit Hawaldar won the 4x200m freestyle in 8:08:32s erasing Police's mark of 8:11.54s set last year.

Richa Mishra set the lone record in the women's section when she hacked the field in the 400m individual medley with a timing of 5:07.13s.
