Nephrology association conference

ALAPPUZHA: The seventh annual conference and continuous education programme of the Kerala Nephrology Association would be held at Lake Palace Resort here on September 23 and 24. Addressing a press conference here, organising committee secretary S. Gomathy said State president of the association S. Krishna Kumar would inaugurate the continuous education programme at 10 a.m. on September 23. Nephrologist M.A. Muthusethupathy will deliver the keynote address on `Reasons for kidney failures and its treatment.' A seminar will held in the inaugural session. Doctors R. Kashi Viswanathan, Geetha Nair, Noushad and Bijoy Antony will participate in the seminar. K.S. Manoj, MP, will inaugurate the annual conference at 6 p.m. — Staff Reporter

Army recruitment from October 4

KOZHIKODE : According to the revised programme for Army recruitment rally scheduled to be held at Sulthan Bathery from October 4 to 8, screening of candidates from Wayanad, Kozhikode, Kannur, Kasaragod, Palakkad, Malappuram and Thrissur districts and Mahe for technical and clerk category will take place on October 4. Screening of candidates from Ernakulam, Idukki, Kottayam, Alapuzha, Pathanamthitta, Kollam and Tiruvananthapuram will be on on October 5. Screening for tradesmen category for candidates from North Kerala and Mahe and for sons of servicemen, "SOEX". "SOWW", meritorious sportsmen, NCC "C" certificate holders will be held on October 6. The common entrance examination at Army Recruiting Office in Kozhikode for candidates found fit in medical examination is scheduled on November 26 for all categories except clerks. There is no vacancy for nursing assistant. — Special Correspondent

LDC rank-holders plan agitation MALAPPURAM: The Lower Division Clerk Rank Holders' Association has expressed anger at the slow pace of appointments of lower division clerks (LDC) in the district. There were more than 100 vacancies owing to the attitude of certain department heads. In some offices, the kin of the department heads were working on contract since years, and the heads were deliberately delaying the appointment of clerks, the association said. Although the LDC rank list with 725 names was published nine months ago, only 84 appointments were made. As many as 204 appointments were made from the last LDC rank list during the same period. — Staff Reporter

Probe begins

KOZHIKODE: The police started investigation into the death of a nurse, Shereena, of Ramanattukara, who is reported to have set herself ablaze near Madhuravanam junction on Civil Station-Kottooly road on Thursday. Preliminary investigation revealed that it was a case of suicide, said City Police Commissioner Balram Kumar Upadhyay. — Staff Reporter

Kochuveli railway terminal development

Thiruvananthapuram: Work on the Rs.22-crore second phase development of the Kochuveli railway terminal to handle more long distance trains will be inaugurated in October, said Pannian Ravindran, MP, on Friday. He was commissioning the renovated waiting hall for reserved passengers at Thiruvananthapuram Central Railway Station here. Mr. Ravindran said Union Minister of State for Railways R.Velu would be arriving in the capital to hold talks in this regard. - Staff Reporter

KOLLAM: The district convention of the Environment Protection Coordination Council will be held at Kundara Elampallur Government Upper Primary School at 10 a.m. on September 24. The convention will be inaugurated by convener of the Plachimada Samara Samithy R. Ajayan. — Staff Reporter

Call against commercialisation

KANNUR: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan has called upon universities to act against commercialisation of education, as the Government is trying to ensure social justice and merit in the higher education sector. Inaugurating the valedictory function of Kannur University's decennial celebration on Friday, the Chief Minister said the Left Democratic Front Government would in no way encourage commercialisation of the education sector. - Staff Reporter

CEE told to follow prospectus

Kochi: Justice S. Siri Jagan has directed the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations to complete the counselling process and admission to engineering courses strictly in accordance with the prospectus. The judge said that if admissions were made otherwise, it should be reviewed and made in accordance with the prospectus. He was passing orders on six petitions challenging the Government order stipulating 50 per cent minimum marks in mathematics in the plus two examinations for admission to engineering courses under certain universities. — Staff Reporter

B.Ed. options

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: As many as 13,094 candidates had submitted options online for the B.Ed course by 5 p.m. on Friday, a press note issued here by the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations said. Friday was the last date for submitting options for the B.Ed course. As many as 5,65,719 options were submitted by 5 p.m., the press note added. — Staff Reporter

Madhavan Nair donates prize money

Thiruvananthapuram: Indian Space Research Organisation Chairman G. Madhavan Nair on Thursday said he was donating Rs.1 lakh, received as part of the first Sree Chithira Tirunal Award, to the Sree Chithira Tirunal Trust to institute an award to a student who got the highest marks in Mathematics and Science. The award, he said, might be given to a girl student from the economically backward section and be named the SLV-3 Award. Mr. Nair announced this after receiving the award from President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam at a function in Thiruvananthapuram. — Staff Reporter

Bank unions threaten stir

KOCHI: The United Forum of Bank Unions has announced that a strike will be organised in the banking sector on October 3. The strike is to support the ongoing agitation launched by the employees of Lord Krishna Bank. Employees, including officers, will take part in the strike, a press release said. The forum urged the Government to settle the issue at the earliest. — Staff Reporter

Boiler attendants competency exam

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Factories and Boilers Department has decided to conduct the Second Class Boiler Attendants competency examination from November 28 to 30 and the First Class Boiler Attendants competency examination from December 5 to 7. Those with SSLC and three years work experience in a registered boiler can appear for the former. The applications are available free from the Secretary, Examination Board, Factories and Boilers Director Office, Vanchiyoor, Thiruvananthapuram - 35 — Special Correspondent
