Ludhiana: Even as Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Friday ordered a probe into the alleged high handedness of the police while controlling agitating veterinary students, a case was registered against some 200 students for preventing the police from performing their duty. Taking cognizance of media reports on the "alleged high handedness" of the police in controlling the agitating veterinary students at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) yesterday where the Chief Minister was to inaugurate a Farm Mela, Capt. Singh ordered the local Deputy Commissioner to "look into the entire matter". An official spokesman said in Chandigarh that the Chief Minister has directed Deputy Commissioner Ashok Gupta to submit his report with a week. Around 100 students, including girls, of the College of Veterinary Sciences of PAU here were subjected to alleged high handedness of the police. The students were protesting against the setting up of Guru Angad Dev Veterinary University here just before the Chief Minister was to reach the venue for inauguration of the Farm Mela. The arrival of the Chief Minister was delayed due to the protest of the students who were opposing the setting up of the new University as adequate number of jobs was not available. Meanwhile, Ludhiana police registered cases against 200 students, including around 20 girls, who had sat on a dharna before the arrival of the Chief Minister. The police said that a case has been registered under various sections of the IPC against the students, including the girls. No arrest has been made so far. The police have accused the students in the FIR, which has been registered at the Sarabha Nagar Police Station, of preventing policemen from performing their duty, issuing threats and illegal confinement. Expressing sympathies with the veterinary students, Capt. Singh reiterated that the entire selection process for the recruitment of 482 Veterinary Doctors would be completed within a week. . Meanwhile the Shiromani Akali Dal said in Chandigarh that its women wing would organise a dharna at Ludhiana on September 26 to protest the alleged molestation and repression of girl students and doctors at the Punjab Agricultural University and other places on Thursday. -- PTI
