Nine cops suspended for custodial death

LUCKNOW: Nine policemen, including an inspector, were suspended for dereliction of duty following the custodial death of an undertrial in Shahjahanpur district on Thursday. Among the other suspended cops were one head constable and seven constables.

State Home Secretary Arun Sinha told newsmen that a magisterial inquiry had been ordered into the circumstances leading to the undertrial's death . He said the investigations were being conducted by the circle officer of the Tilhar police station in Shahjahanpur district.

Mr. Sinha said the undertrial, Rajvir, committed suicide by hanging in the toilet of the Kanth police station on Thursday.

Meanwhile, a state of high alert has been declared in Uttar Pradesh in view of the forthcoming festivals of Durga Puja and Dussehra and the month of Ramzan.

The Home Secretary said the security forces had been sensitised at all important religious places, public places and venues of religious functions.
