CHENNAI: Friday dawned special for many, as they greeted people with roses. Well wishers, doctors and celebrities visited cancer patients at Apollo Speciality Hospital to say that they care for them. Everyone on the hospital premises at Teynampet was in a festive mood, the atmosphere infectious with excitement, and the day filled with various activities. The Rose Day celebrations began with actors `Jeyam' Ravi and Jeeva distributing roses to cancer patients in their wards and spending time with the children there.
`A new experience'
Ravi described it as a new experience, and lauded the efforts of the volunteers of the Apollo Cancer Support Group, who help the patients recover emotionally from the fear of the disease. During his visit, he was gifted with a white rose made of tissue paper by Pavithra, a child undergoing treatment. "I am glad that I have made others happy, and was touched by the patients' heartfelt wishes." Jeeva thanked the hospital for the opportunity, as it was motivating to meet patients who were battling with the disease. Both of them assured support to the efforts made through personal visits. About 150 cancer patients at the hospital, including 20 children, were given gifts and sweets.
Uitlity kits distributed
At the Adyar Cancer Institute, actor Prabhu interacted with patients and distributed utility kits and roses to them. The patients were given a visual treat through several programmes. The ceremony was organised by Sanctuary, the cancer support group of the institute. The Childs Trust Cancer Centre and Comprehensive Cancer Care Programme for children was inaugurated at the Kanchi Kamakoti Childs Trust Hospital on the same day. Inaugurated by actress Khushboo Sundar, the centre envisaged an increase in the number of children who survive the disease. `Ray of Light', a charitable organisation dedicated to underprivileged children affected with cancer, was also inaugurated. Can stop, a cancer support organisation of the Sundaram Medical Foundation, conducted various events, including slogan writing and painting contests for students at Spencer Plaza to create an awareness of the disease. Stalls spreading the anti-tobacco message were also set up. Utility kits were distributed to patients in various government hospitals and red roses to the public. The Vasantha Memorial Trust, formed for the cause of cancer, organised programmes in Royapettah Hospital and Government General Hospital, where singer Bombay Jayashree and television actor Chetan participated.
