CHENNAI : An unidentified gang kidnapped an 11-year-old boy from Shastri Nagar in the city on Friday and has demanded Rs 60 lakh as ransom. Police said the boy, Alexander, is a resident of 10th Cross, Shastri Nagar and is studying Class 6 in a private school in Besant Nagar. According to family members, Alexander left for school in the morning on his cycle. Even as he was nearing the 7th Avenue, a light green Mahindra Van suddenly came near him and forcibly kidnapped him at 8.50 a.m. The abduction was noticed by an eyewitness, who alerted the family members. Shastri Nagar police were informed immediately, by 9.30 a.m., the entire city police were put on alert, police said. The information available suggests that the vehicle's licence number started with "TN-51", but the number was not known. The motive for the kidnap was not known as yet, police said, though the kidnappers had demanded Rs 60 lakh as ransom through a phone call. The photo identity card of the student had the telephone number of his grand parents who lived in Tiruvanmiyur, and they received a call around 2.00 p.m. A crude voice at the other end, spoke in Tamil, demanded a ransom and fixed 8 p.m. as an ultimatum. When the call was traced, police found out that it was made from a private landline in Chengalpattu district, sources said. Speaking to The Hindu , City Additional Commissioner S R Jangid said all check posts had been alerted.
