Guwahati: The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) president Brindaban Goswami on Friday night tendered his resignation as Leader of the Opposition at a meeting of the AGP Legislature Party (AGPLP). The AGP legislators, however, rejected Mr. Goswami's resignation and requested him to continue. Mr. Goswami refused to withdraw his resignation, prompting the legislators to hold a meeting to workout a compromise formula. AGP general secretary Hitendra Nath Goswami told The Hindu that the AGPLP would decide on Mr. Goswami's resignation on Saturday. The meeting was attended by 21 of the 24 MLAs of the party. Mr. Hitendra Nath Goswami said Mr. Goswami in his resignation letter expressed his desire to devote more time to the party. Since the AGP is the largest Opposition party with 24 MLAs in the 126-member Assembly, Mr. Goswami was also elected to the post of the Leader of the Opposition after he was unanimously elected AGPLP leader. Party sources said some AGP leaders later demanded that Mr. Goswami should quit one of the posts of party president and Leader of the Opposition, as the party constitution stipulates that a leader should hold only one post.
