Navaratri celebrations begin in city's temples

HYDERABAD: Navaratri festival, that marks nine days of reverence of mother Goddess in the form of Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswati, began in temples and pandals in the twin cities.

Most of the city temples of Lakshmi and Saraswati were decked up. The pandals, where the idols of the goddess will be installed, were being decorated with flowers, serial lighting and colourful images of the goddess in thermocol.

Sculptors in Dhoolpet were busy giving finishing touches to the idols of goddess Durga for Durgashtami on September 30. Youngsters in the city too are busy -- finalising plans for Dandiya nights being organised at various pandals and hotels.

"We are heading to the Garba and Dandiya Raas near Lal Darwaaja organised by Medh Kshatriya community of old city. The `Raas' here has been a ritual for about 50 years," said Arvind Agarwal from Shakkar Kotanear Gulzar Houz. Despite rain, members of the Bengali community turned up in large numbers for the inaugural of `Bangiya Sanskriti Utsab' and Durga Puja celebrations at Keyes High School on Friday.
