At ceremonial passing-out parade at Southern Naval Command

KOCHI : Five officers of the 64th Observer Course of the Indian Navy were awarded `Wings' by Rear Admiral M.P. Muralidharan, Flag Officer Sea Training (FOST), at a ceremonial passing-out parade held at the Southern Naval Command on Friday.

The officers were trained at the Observer School, Kochi, under Commander P.S. Virdi. During their 46-week course, the officers were trained in anti-submarine warfare, tactics employed in air warfare and exploitation of electronic systems. They also received basic training in air navigation and flying procedures.

Lieutenant V.Kasiraman was awarded the Sub Lieutenant R.V. Kunte Memorial Book Prize for standing first in ground subjects and the Uttar Pradesh Trophy for the best all round trainee, while Lieutenant A.K. Singh was awarded the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief Eastern Naval Command Rolling Trophy for standing first in flying training.

In expansion mode

Addressing the passing-out parade, Mr. Muralidharan said the training equipped officers with the basic knowledge to man a modern and multi-mission aircraft. "The Navy is in the process of expansion and modernisation, with the induction of various types of new platforms having potent weapons and sensors. The onus of utilisation and exploitation of these sensors and integrating them with the platforms at sea lie with you," the Admiral said. He reminded them that they would not only serve as the eyes and ears of the Navy but also be the brain behind the sensors and hence have a very responsible role to play.

The officers will now function as airborne tacticians on board maritime reconnaissance and anti-submarine warfare aircraft of the Navy.
