Farmer dies after consuming poison

Staff Reporter

ALAPPUZHA: A paddy farmer died at Alappuzha Medical College Hospital on Thursday night.

Vijayappan of Anjubhavan, Purakkad, here, had been admitted to the hospital two weeks ago after he consumed poison.

His family members said Vijayappan committed suicide following financial crisis. He had apparently taken a loan of Rs.50,000 from the State Bank of India, Edathua branch, and Rs.2 lakh from a private financier. Vijayappan was unable to repay the loans owing to crop failure. The family members said the private financier had initiated recovery action against Vijayappan.

The bank too had asked Vijayappan to repay the loan.
