Court seeks explanation from Shahi Imam

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Friday sought an explanation from the Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid, Syed Ahmed Bukhari, for alleged non-compliance of its direction to `voluntarily' remove `illegal constructions' along the walls of the mosque.

A Division Bench of the Court comprising Justice Vijender Jain and Justice Rekha Sharma issued the direction when counsel for voluntary organisation Heritage and Culture Forum, the petitioner in the matter, informed the Bench that the Shahi Imam had not complied with the court order of November 2005.

The Bench asked the Shahi Imam to file his reply within two weeks. The Bench has been hearing PIL by Heritage and Culture Forum seeking removal of encroachments.
