Thiruvananthapuram: Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chairman G. Madhavan Nair on Friday called for effective utilisation of modern technological facilities like telemedicine so that the public is benefited. He was inaugurating the 15th national conference of the Indian Cooperative Oncology Network (ICON) here. The ISRO was committed to linking all major hospitals and national cancer institutes in the country via the satellite. However, a team of dedicated personnel should be put in place at the nodal and specialty centres to ensure that the telemedicine links are put to best use. He stressed the need for early cancer research and maintenance of a proper database of cancer patients, including their diet, risk factors and so on, for research purposes. The possibility of using ayurveda in the treatment of cancer should be explored. The former director of Regional Cancer Centre M. Krishnan Nair and ICON 2006 convener Purvish M. Parikh spoke. The three-day conference will deliberate on evolving treatment protocols for cancer which are best suited to the Indian context.
