Development work of Kochuveli terminal to begin in October

Thiruvananthapuram: Work on the Rs.22-crore second phase development of the Kochuveli railway terminal to handle more long distance trains will be inaugurated in October, said Pannian Ravindran, MP, on Friday.

He was commissioning the renovated waiting hall for passengers with reservation at the Thiruvananthapuram Central railway station here.

Union Minister of State for Railways R. Velu would hold talks here in this regard, he said. The development of the terminal at Kochuveli was being taken up owing to the congestion at the Thiruvananthapuram Central.

As part of the second phase of development of the terminal, the Railway would construct more platforms to begin more long distance trains and pit lines and sick lines to take care of the maintenance of the rakes of the trains that originated from Kochuveli.

Mr. Ravindran said he had put pressure on the Union Railway Ministry to set up a coach maintenance facility at Nemom to take care of the maintenance of the trains originating from the Thiruvananthapuram division.

The waiting hall was renovated as part of the `Touch and Feel' programme of the Railway. The waiting hall, situated near the entry to the foot overbridge, on platform one was provided with vitrified floor tiles, separate toilets for men and women and exclusive toilets for the physically challenged. Modern lighting arrangements were also provided.

The ladies and upper class waiting hall on platform one of the station would be renovated in the next phase as part of the programme, sources said.

Thiruvananthapuram Central was one among the five stations selected for the programme in the railway division. As part of improving passenger amenities in the division, a sum of Rs.8 crore would be spent this financial year, said Divisional Railway Manager S. Vijayakumaran.
