Thiruvananthapuram: The Thiruvananthapuram railway division, which has the largest number of 1,300 coaches in Southern Railway, has begun mechanised cleaning of railway coaches using the latest machines and with private participation. The modern coach cleaning system is being introduced on a trial basis by the Railway for the first time in the State. The cleaning of seven long distance Express trains starting from Thiruvananthapuram Central and six long distance Express trains originating from Ernakulam is carried out using the latest machines by the personnel of M/s Eureka Forbes. The cleaning work using machines was being done for the past three months and the public had appreciated the endeavour, Divisional Railway Manager S. Viajaykumaran told mediapersons after a demonstration of the mechanised cleaning process here on Friday. Chief Rolling Stock Engineer, Southern Railway, Kabir Ahmed was present. As soon the rakes were taken to the yard, the personnel of the private firm cleaned the train using vacuum cleaner, scrubbing machine and other cleaning machines. The mechanised cleaning of the rake was completed in four-and-a-half hours, said Eureka Forbes project manager Sanjay Jhale. In Thiruvananthapuram railway division, 99 coaches - 60 at Thiruvananthapuram and 39 at Ernakulam - were cleaned using machines every day, said Senior Divisional Mechanical Engineer T.M. Abdu Rehman.
