Killed in accident

ERODE: Vasu, a conductor attached to a State Transport bus, died on the spot when brick-laden lorry hit him while he was travelling on his motorcycle. He was on his way to attend duty when the accident occurred. - Staff Reporter

Couple commit suicide

ERODE: Mariappan and his wife Palaniammal of Thalapathy near Vellitirupur committed suicide by consuming poison. According Vellitirupur police, the couple had frequent quarrel that led to the suicide. - Staff Reporter

Murdered

OMALUR: A 40-year-old man was murdered when he tried to resolve a land dispute between two groups of persons in Tholasampatti near here on Friday.

The Tholasampatti police said Sekar of Perumal Kovil sustained serious injuries when one of the groups consisting Thirukanchi of Pallapatti and his sons beat him. He died on the way to hospital. Another person Gopal (36) was injured and had been admitted to the Omalur Government Hospital. - Staff Reporter

National conference

SALEM: The Department of Mathematics, Periyar University, will organise a national conference on differential equations and applications on September 28 and 29.

According to a release from head of the department, E. Thandapani, professors from the Indian Institutes of Technology, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, and Pondicherry University will speak in the conference. Research scholars and students from various parts of the country will also participate in the conference. - Staff Reporter

Unidentified men decamp with jewellery

NAMAKKAL: A few unidentified persons robbed jewellery from a woman near Paramathi Velur on Thursday night.

The Velur police said Sarasu (55) of Pilikkalpalayam and her relatives were sleeping in the house when the incident occurred. - Staff Reporter

ATTUR: Two unidentified persons assaulted a woman and robbed gold jewellery at Thammampatti near here on Friday. - Staff Reporter

Six held for murder

Tuticorin: Police on Saturday arrested six persons in connection with the murder of Subramanian (32) by throwing a bomb and attacking him with a sickle, while he was returning home from the court herre on Tuesday. R. Selvakumar (27), A. Marimuthu (22), Renjith (29), R. Chiranjeevi (23), M. Ramakrishnan (21) and K. Povas (36) took revenge on Subramanian, since he killed Dhanasekaran, a relative of Povas, here in 2005. All the accused were remanded to judicial custody by a judicial magistrate court here.

PDS rice seized

Nagercoil: A lorry with 150 bags of PDS rice was seized at Aralvoimozhi in the district. Shaji, the driver and Chandran, the cleaner, who have been arrested, confessed that the consignment was being taken to Kerala.

Woman ends life

Nagercoil: Deepa (21) committed suicide by consuming poison on Saturday. Police said Deepa of Rajakkamangalam near Nagercoil took the extreme step owing to stomach pain. — Staff Reporter

DMK-Congress talks inconclusive

CHENNAI: Seat-sharing talks between Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and Congress for the local body elections remained inconclusive on Saturday and it will continue on Sunday.

Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president M. Krishnasswamy told newsmen here on Saturday that the two-member committee, appointed by the party high command, began negotiations with the DMK panel headed by Arcot Veerasami. He hoped that an agreement would be reached soon. Apart from Mr. Krishnasswamy, party treasurer D. Sudarasanam is the other member of the committee.

Meanwhile, the TNCC president appointed committees for all revenue districts, which will receive applications from prospective party candidates. These panels were headed by Union Ministers P. Chidambaram, Mani Shankar Aiyar, E.V.K.S. Elangovan, G.K. Vasan, party MPs, MLAs and district committee presidents in their respective districts. Like in the previous Assembly election, prospective candidates need not pay any fee along with their application forms. — Special Correspondent

Marine communication equipment seized

CHENNAI: Officers of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) intercepted a passenger who arrived from Singapore at the Anna International Terminal on Friday and seized from his baggage navigational and marine communication equipment valued at Rs.5.40 lakh.

According to P. Babu, Additional Director General of DRI, the passenger had declared the goods as cameras and put their value at Rs.1,25,000. On examination of his baggage, the officials found marine equipment including marine transceivers, colour LCD sounder, echo sounder, all in trade quantities. As per the Foreign Trade Policy, Very High Frequency transceivers are restricted for import without a licence issued by the Union Ministry of Communications and Information Technology.

The passenger had stated that he had procured the goods in Singapore and brought them for handing over to a Chennai-based person and he was not aware of the purpose for which the equipment was used.

He said he never used the equipment and had made about 70 trips to Singapore since 2002 and brought electronic goods and handed them over to the person. The passenger was arrested and remanded to judicial custody. — Special Correspondent

Special train to Bhubaneswar

CHENNAI: Southern Railway will run following special train to Bhubaneswar from Chennai Central to clear the extra rush of passengers.

Train No 0631 will leave Chennai Central at 9.10 p.m. on September 24 (Sunday) and reach Bhubaneswar at 5.30 p.m. the next day.

It will stop at Gudur, Nellore, Ongole, Chirala, Tenali, Vijayawada, Eluru, Tadepallligudem, Rajahmundry Tuni, Anakapalli, Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram Jn, Srikakulam Road, Palasa, Brahmapur, Balugaon and Khurda Road. Reservation is available for the train, according to a Railway press release. — Special Correspondent

Malayalam poet to be honoured

CHENNAI: The 21st annual Asan Smaraka Kavitha Puraskaram award, instituted by the Asan Memorial Association, Chennai, will be given to Malayalam poet D. Vinayachandran this year.

The prize, consisting of Rs 30,000 and a citation, will be given away by Vayalar Ravi, Union Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs, at a function to be held in Chennai on October 15, says a press release here. — Special Correspondent
