KOZHIKODE: Environmental groups, and school and college students have appealed to the District Collector, and the City Corporation to protect and conserve the `Nagara chira'(City Lake), situated near the mini bypass between Arayidathupalam and Eranhipalam. The memorandum appealed that the conservation of the nagara chira be taken up as one of the projects of the Corporation, on the occasion of its 140th anniversary. Environmentalists point out that the water body is the only large fresh water source which now existed in Kozhikode, and hence the urgency of preserving it for posterity. The nagara chira is the water source for a number of wells in the vicinity. If the land where the lake now existed is reclaimed, the wells would be bereft of the water source. Migrant birds flock to the picturesque lake site, at different seasons of the year, providing an attraction to city dwellers and tourists alike. The chira is also the habitat of a number of other plant and insect species. The environmentalists expressed apprehension that the wetland ought not to have the same fate as many other such fresh water bodies in the city that have been reclaimed.Appeals have also been made to the Chief Minister, Revenue Minister, and Land Revenue Commissioner to ensure that the lake is protected.
