KOTTAYAM: Captain Nicy Francis, with a fine show, helped Assumption College retain the Mahatma Gandhi University inter-college women's basketball title at MGU Stadium here on Saturday. Assumption finished with an all-win record in the three-team league. St Xavier's (Aluva) finished runner-up while Alphonsa (Pala) was third. The scores (league): Assumption, Changanassery 63 (Nicy Francis 13, Renjusha Mathew 11) bt St Xavier's, Aluva 55 (Cimi Jose Kavalakatt 11); Assumption 55 (Nicy Francis 14, Renjusha 12) bt Alphonsa, Pala 25; St Xavier's 49 (Cimi Jose 11) bt Alphonsa 23.
MGU teams
A 12-member Mahatma Gandhi University team for the inter-university basketball championship, to be held in Rajasthan in October, was announced at the end of the MGU women's basketball championship. The team: Nicy Francis, Leena Mariam Baby, Nimmy Thomas, Renjusha Mathew, K.S. Anu, Liji Mathew (all Assumption), Cimi Jose Kavalakatt, Neena Harindran, N.S. Lija, P. Janes, Jilna Raj (all St Xavier's), S. Remya (Alphonsa). Coach: K. Sunil (MGU coach).
Inter-collegiate events
The Assumption College Golden Jubilee basketball tournament and the Sr. Tresa Mary memorial volleyball tournament begin at the Assumption College courts, Changanassery, on Monday. Some of the top teams of the State, will figure in the two all-Kerala women's tournaments.
