Road renamed after CPI(M) leader

THRISSUR: The Thrissur Corporation at a council meeting on Friday decided to rename the Post Office Road in the city as `Azhikkodan Raghavan Road' in memory of the veteran leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M). The CPI(M) Thrissur Area Committee had made a formal request to this effect.

According to Corporation sources, the change of name was effected on Saturday, the 34th anniversary of the assassination of Mr. Raghavan. — Staff Reporter

Satyagraha centenary observance

Kozhikode: The district-level inauguration of the centenary of the Satyagraha launched by Mahatma Gandhi will be held at Gandhi Griham here on Sunday under the aegis of the Gandhi Centre for Rural Development and Gandhi Peace Foundation. Programmes will be held through out the year and senior Gandhians honoured. A seminar on `The relevance of Satyagraha in the modern age,' training in manufacture of Swadeshi products and exhibition of the products will be held at the district headquarters, Gandhi Centre director Jacob Pulikkan and Gandhi Peace Foundation secretary V.K. Balakrishnan Nair said in a release here on Saturday. — Staff Reporter

Office-bearers elected

KOZHIKODE: The Malabar Chamber of Commerce, the region's oldest organisation representing merchants' community, will have a new team of office-bearers headed by P. Zakeer. They assumed office at the annual general body meeting of the Commerce held at Taj Residency in Kozhikode on Friday. Industries Minister Elamaram Karim was the chief guest. — Staff Reporter

KOLLAM: Meloor R. Sreekumar and P. Rajendra Prasad were elected president and secretary general of the Quilon Management Association at a general body meeting of the association here on Friday. The other office-bearers are George Ninan, vice-president; Lawrance Harold, K. Shirish and K. Rajan, secretaries; and G. Vijaya Kumar, treasurer. — Staff Reporter

Quilon Trade Fair

KOLLAM: The annual Quilon Trade Fair, organised by the Rotary Club of Quilon Lake City, will be held at the NSS Complex here from September 28 to October 2. The fair is an all-India exhibition of home appliances and consumer products. — Staff Reporter

Microchips to be fixed on elephants

KOLLAM: Minister for Forests Benoy Visom will inaugurate the State level programme for fixing microchips on captive elephants on October 2. The programme is being organised as part of the Wildlife Week Celebrations of the Forest Department. In a statement, Assistant Forest Conservator V. Prem Kumar has requested owners of all captive elephants in the district to ensure that their elephants are brought to the Asramam Maidan at 9 a.m. on October 2.

State has powers to ban colas: Minister

Thiruvananthapuram: Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister M. Vijayakumar said the State Government would issue rules under the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act to empower the State to enforce the ban on colas. At a press conference here on Saturday, Mr. Vijayakumar said the Government had full powers to ban the colas under Section 7 (1) of the PFA Act. The Government decision was in the right direction and the Government would appeal to the Supreme Court. — Special Correspondent

Vigilance to probe incinerator deal

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Government has ordered a Vigilance inquiry into the irregularities in the purchase of an incinerator for Kayamkulam municipality. Local Administration Minister Paloli Mohammed Kutty said in a release here on Saturday that the municipal council decided to purchase an incinerator for solid waste management and Rs.21.5 lakh was given to a company as advance in violation of the norms. The Municipal Joint Director who probed the deal said the officials and the council were responsible for the lapse. He recommended realising the money from the officials and the councillors. Since the councillors were also involved in the deal, the Government decided to conduct a Vigilance inquiry and initiate action against the guilty, the release said. — Special Correspondent

Options for engineering courses open

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Students in the general category with less than 50 per cent marks in the qualifying examination and those in the SEBC/OEC category with less than 45 per cent marks can now submit options online for engineering courses in colleges under the Kerala, Calicut and Kannur Universities, a press note issued by the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations (CEE) here on Saturday, said. This facility is being given as per the order of the Kerala High Court on September 22. The students can submit options till 5 p.m. on September 24.

Google writing contest

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kochi is the only centre in Kerala and one of the 10 in the country selected by Google India for conducting its creative writing contest for identifying India's top English writing talent, Google Wordmasters 2006, on September 30. The contest involves the stringing together of a randomly generated list of words in a logical and grammatically correct topic of choice. The participants must be graduates. There is no upper age limit. More information about the contest and the registration details are available in the following website http: //www.google.co.in/Wordmasters. The deadline for registration is September 25. — Special Correspondent
