NEW DELHI: A record number of book lovers visited the Delhi Book Fair 2006 at Pragati Maidan here on Saturday, the penultimate day of the event.

More than 150,000 people, which is so far the highest for a single day, visited the fair that showcases not only the progress made so far by the Indian publishing industry but a vast panorama of Indian books on a wide range of subjects including fiction, non-fiction, academic and technical books, textbooks, reference books, classics and dictionaries, besides children's books.

Besides fiction and sports-related books, children's books have registered a brisk sale at the nine-day fair.

The special attraction on Saturday was a painting competition organised by the Federation of Indian Publishers (FIP) that saw the participation of more than 450 students from 35 schools of Delhi. The subjects in which the students showed their creativity were "Utilisation of Waste Material in a Useful Way" and "Environmental Pollution and Protection".

After the competition, prizes were distributed by FIP president Shakti Malik.

Organised jointly by FIP and the India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO), some 300 leading Indian publishers are participating in the fair.

The fair assumes added significance as India has been accorded the coveted ``guest country'' status at Frankfurt Book Fair 2006 and "guest of honour'' at Salan Du Fiare in Paris in March 2007.

A wide range of books in not only English and Hindi but also regional languages like Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Gujarati and Marathi are available at the fair.

All the exhibitors are offering a 10 per cent discount on every book. A special attraction of the fair is the participation of giant online books marketplace like A1 Books.com and Google.com from the US.
