Rajahmundry: Speakers from different walks of life recalled the history of local vernacular daily `Samacharam', which celebrated its golden jubilee on Sunday. The celebrations began at Anam Kalakendram with the lighting of the lamp by Rajahmundry Mayor M.S. Chakravarti and his wife. MP Vundavilli Aruna Kumar, Tankasala Ashok, Editor, `Vaartha', Sanskrit scholars - Madhura Krishna Murthy Sastry and Viswanatha Gopalakrishna - and Press Club president B. Srinivas were present. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Aruna Kumar recalled his association with late Gandham Naga Subrahmanyam, `a journalist with ethical values.' He said running a newspaper without facing criticism from any section of society was impossible, but Subrahmanyam made it possible. Karri Rama Reddy presided over the function and Mr. D. Bapiraju compered the programme. N. Ravi Prakash, Editor of `Samacharam', in his report said that his father Gandhram Seetharamnjaneyulu launched the paper in 1956 and it played a key role in many social movements. Mr. Tankasala Ashok, in his keynote address, said small newspapers like `Zameen Rytu' in Nellore and `Samacharam' in Rajahmundry highlighted local issues prominently. He said that `Samacharam' proved that small newspapers would not be affected by the onslaught of tabloids if they maintained ethics and values. Mr. Chakravarthi said before his term ended he would see that the city got a stadium, as it was the wish of Subrahmanyam.
Mr. Krishna Murthy Sastry, Mr. Viswantha Gopalakrishna and others spoke.
