NEW DELHI: The recent decision of the Union Government to stop sealing and demolitions till Monday (September 25) and stand by the September 7 notification of the Union Urban Development Ministry is being seen as an attempt by the party to undo the damage and prevent the Bharatiya Janata Party from taking credit for getting relief for the traders and the general public at large. Similarly the elected representatives as well as the Congress leaders have welcomed the decision of the Group of Ministers (GoM) stating that this should have been done much earlier. It is learnt that the Congress leadership held deliberations with Union Minister for Urban Development Jaipal Reddy and his deputy Ajay Maken as well as Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and DPCC president Ram Babu Sharma on the ground situation and the possible fallout after violence erupted during the Delhi bandh. It was felt that although the traders had called for the bandh but the BJP had extended support to it putting the Congress in a bind. According to party insiders, the general viewpoint was that if the Congress Government provided any relief after the conclusion of the bandh in Delhi, the BJP and the traders could well claim credit for all this. Meanwhile, the party MLAs and Councillors are rejoiced over the stand of the party as well that of the Union Government with regard to sealing and demolitions.
