Karunanidhi's stand on Katchathivu flayed

Special Correspondent

"He wrote to Manmohan with an eye on local body polls"

CHENNAI: General secretary of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Jayalalithaa on Sunday said the fishermen of Tamil Nadu lost their traditional rights to fish around Katchathivu after the island was given to Sri Lanka through an agreement in 1974.

Referring to Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi's plea to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for working out a perpetual lease of Katchathivu with Sri Lanka, she said in a statement here that though Mr.Karunanidhi was trying to pose that he was interested in the welfare of fishermen, he did not oppose the Centre's decision then to cede the island to Sri Lanka.

The Chief Minister had written to the Prime Minister on the issue now, only with an eye on the local body elections, she said.
